Unwanted Hair

A course that follows the growth cycle, on the face or the body.

Shaving lasts two days, waxing lasts three weeks and requires growing the hair out first, and both are permanent commitments to a routine. Light-based hair reduction is the alternative — a defined course, after which there is far less to manage.

How it works

Light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft and converted to heat, which disables the follicle's ability to produce new hair. It only reaches follicles currently in their growth phase, which is why the appointments are spaced across the cycle rather than booked close together.

Darker, coarser hair against lighter skin gives the clearest target. Very fine, grey, red or blonde hair carries little pigment and responds poorly — that is a limitation of the physics, not of the device, and you will be told at consultation if it applies to you.

Facial hair

Facial hair is often hormonally driven, particularly along the jaw, chin and upper lip. It responds to treatment, but the underlying driver is still there, so maintenance sessions are usually part of the picture rather than a sign something went wrong.

If facial hair has appeared or increased noticeably in a short period, it is worth raising with your doctor as well.

Before you start

Shave the day before rather than wax, thread or pluck — the treatment needs the root intact. Stop any epilation four weeks beforehand. Recently tanned skin is not treated, from sun or from a bottle.
